Seattle’s Stickers vocalist/saxophonist Gabi Page-Fort sent us these answers to our questions in this q and also a.
q: What is the last song you (really) heard?
a: I’m obsessed with Steeleye Span‘s “Long Lankin” now and always. It’s a tremendously frightening tale of child murderer sung in a lilting and beautiful folk prelude to heavy metal. Also Emily is having one of her frequent Janet Jackson Control moments. If you’re making big moves with your life be sure to let that song help you.
q: What is your most common reaction to hearing your own music?
a: I’m always impressed. In my head we’re Bon Jovi playing Jones Beach. I always figure I’m making up any and all goodness I hear with my naive fantasies – then I hear recordings and am like, look out Bon Jovi! My dad once asked me how I found such sexy talented musicians to hold it down so I could cut loose. Recordings give me the only possible outside view on my dumb luck. I imagine proving to my grand kids that I haven’t made it all up by busting out fleshy pink vinyl and powering up the ancient turntable and blowing their future sass minds.

q: What is your favorite artist/band to see live?
a: We’re collectively obsessed with Health Problems. They had their last show before a brief education hiatus the other night – with our sister band Smiling, which feature’s our very own Troy’s beautiful voice. It was electric. Ian grabs your attention with every bone in his face then the lock in and throw you against your own skin.
q: What is your favorite venue (in NYC, if applicable)?
a: Cake Shop. Emily and I were both young in New York in our twenties – we didn’t know each other but she sold me ginger cookies at Oren’s and we both loved the shopping cupcake cherry cool basement heaven offered by Cake Shop in summer.
q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?
a: Vibrations fest. Frank Correa had art there – he’s a genius, he made our band pics – and Aidan Fitzgerald too. Also free movement society was featured there: Freedom is pure culture. I’m also still reeling from the romantic poops in love paintings I saw in the Richard Hamilton retrospective at the Tate Modern this spring. He was an architect and a brilliant reinterpreter of mass culture. The poops are based on soft focus toilet paper ads.
q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be?)
a: We have nearly a new record’s worth of new songs we’re honing, including one called “Pigeon,” In Which the wisdom and peace of yoga help me express my remorse for the tragic wounded pigeon windowsill dustpan flick to sure death of 2008 (New York) to the tune of air conditioned riddle riffs. We’re also working on two music videos with Emily at the helm and a Fainting Series 7″.
