b: Resurgences in Echo & Mary Chain haircuts. A VHS copy of White Nights I got at the thrift store. I think it’s a Cold War drama where Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines battle the forces of Communism with dance, but I haven’t actually watched it yet.

s: African Cats.

a: Tebowing.
 
 
q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

b: I’m 4-tracking some songs as Pale Yellow on the side, and finally finishing up the first issue of a zine called Cake Time. Andy and I also book shows and might release some zines and music under the name http://www.caketimeboston.com.

s: We have a full length on the horizon; I, personally, have been pushing to hook up with SKYSCRAPER MUSIC MAKER “super music production” company at SKYSCRAPER STUDIO and get Andrew WK some engineering credits on these tracks. But who knows, that may be a couple projects down the line.

a: Girlfriends is in the process of making an album, and it won’t be recorded through a boombox for the most part.

m: I must say the The Met’s production of The Ring of the Nibelung is fascinating and monumental. Wagner would be proud of “The Machine”! Can’t afford the real tickets but the seats in my local movie theatre are comfy and the simulcast provides close-ups and interviews with the stars as they exit the stage. Looking forward to seeing what they do with Siegfried this fall.

a: The growing individualism and independence of the arts. I think we’ve been in a transitory period for the last decade and the old industry dinosaurs are finally turning into oil.

a: We are working on having our next release be a series of EP’s, all around a central theme. Mini operas. Also planning on remixing Sacred Geometry for subwoofer destruction.

b: Union Hall was my favorite for a long time, because I used to work there. These days… Fort Useless! Santos Party House is pretty great too, in a funhouse of debauchery sorta way. Though I’ve always been a fan of Bowery Ballroom, and I’ve had a lot of great (late, very, very late) nights at the Delancey, Trash Bar, and Pianos. I really miss a few venues that I spent a lot of time at a few years back: Rothko, Sin-e, Northsix, and Tonic all have a special place in my concert-going heart. I left New York right before the big diy venue explosion really happened.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

b: I went to see the Justin Beiber movie. I considered it a cultural exploration.

m: Not sure which “culture” they mean… realistic 3D movies…

b: We just made new shirts! We’re continuing to record and release digital singles, and should get working on a full length album in early 2012.

j: The paintings of Frans Post and Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles, which I’m re-reading right now. There should be college classes taught about that book.

k: I spent last month re-reading Kurt Vonnegut books, which I hadn’t read since high school and which totally hold up. Miserable Miracle by Henri Michaux, which is essentially a beautifully composed mescaline diary. And CTI Records stuff from the early 70’s, so a lot of Freddie Hubbard and Hubert Laws.

a: Burnt Ones should have another 7-inch coming out this summer and possibly a cassette release coming as well. Lots of new Burnt Ones songs, just figuring out what to do with them at this point.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

n: A while back I happened on Tristan Perich‘s 1-Bit Symphony. It’s a battery, a microchip, a couple switches, a volume knob, and a headphone jack simply wired together and mounted in a jewel case. The idea of it is pretty wild – that you can participate in the listening experience and that this body of work is contained on one tiny chip in a little CD case. Also, I’m really feeling this remix my friend Alex, who goes by Young Life, made of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” It’s basically just a slowed down version of the song that makes Katy sound like Brian McKnight in drag. And it’s got a really nasty beat.

q: What is your favorite beverage?

n: I’ve been getting back into seltzer lately… Or whiskey and seltzer?

r: I’ve always been into seltzer but people are always trying to rip off my style so I’m probably going to switch it up to some orange-flavored San Pellegrino.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

n: Not sure I have a stand-out favorite, but I recently saw Man Forever (Kid Millions‘ project) as just a duo: it was Kid and Ryan from Tall Firs and one snare drum, that’s it. They just flammed, paradiddled, and rolled all over that drum for at least half an hour without stopping. In fact, I think the sound guy kind of had to signal to them to stop. Everyone in the room was in a trance. I started hearing things that I’m not sure were actually there. Oh and I almost forgot to include one of my favorite bands to see live, Gowns (rip)!!! So, so good live.

n+r: Some local bands that are our favorites to catch live (and who we think are moving things in good directions): Talk Normal, Knyfe Hyts, Aa, Zulus, Hunters, Antimagic, Crime Novels, Adult Themes, Sightings, White Suns, Mr. Dream…did we just name half of Brooklyn’s music scene?

Also, Edan‘s got the souped-up P.A. sounding awesome, so that helps.

n: Totally agree with Rick. Silent Barn, Bruar Falls, and Cakeshop are other quality places where I like to play and/or see shows.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

n: Not that I want to give it more attention than it’s already received, but I’m mildly fascinated with the “news”, put forth by evangelist network Family Radio, that apparently the end of the world is nearer than we thought. According to them, the End Time will happen on May 21st, 2011. Bummer if they’re right. Actually, I’ll be so pissed if they are right because we’ve put so much work into this tour coming up that it would suck if the apocalypse got in the way. But they’ve predicted it to happen before and it hasn’t, so… On a more serious note, I really love photographer Stephan Tillmans‘ Luminant Point Arrays collection. It’s incredibly minimal and so beautiful. If we could use that stuff for album cover art, I would…

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

n: Biggest item on our plate right now is the tour we have coming up at the end of the month. We’ll be rolling down the East coast, up through parts of the Midwest, then past the Great Lakes region and into Pennsylvania on our loop back home. We’re incredibly psyched. In the meantime, some friends have been remixing the songs from our 7″ and they’re coming out awesome. The latest is from SF bros Clipd Beaks and it rules. And when we come back from tour, we’ll be playing some more NYC shows. Just confirmed a Northside Festival show for June 17th with Milk Music and we’ll be playing a benefit show on July 1st for a non-profit called The Emancipation Network, and that will be with a bigger-name band that we cannot yet announce.

r: After the tour our sights will be set on writing and recording, since we have a bunch of new songs and there are more in the works. Hopefully another release will be materializing soon.

a: I have developed a mild fascination with Matthew Lesko and his online presence. I can’t get enough of his infomercials, especially Tax Rap & that disturbing Gotta Get Your Money one where he just randomly starts beating a man. Something got tragically lost in execution on that one. That man is one of the most significant visual/performance artists of our time whether or not he realizes it. I think he does.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: Man, where to start. I recently created a collection of VSTs based on the world-renowned circuit bent instruments of my Folktek cohorts. I’m getting ready to tour Europe with a live a/v performance I cooked up. I’m filming a sixty minute collection of short films at my place of employment (unbeknownst to my employer). I also recently purchased a vinyl lathe I plan on restoring. New albums, new collaborations, made a banana bread a minute ago I want to go eat. Nice chatting with you folks, thanks for your support.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: The Tides of Manaunaun by Henry Cowell. He’s a piano man; early 20th century. It’s like an earthquake with the most rewarding melodies on top. Deep stuff.

q: What is your favorite beverage?

a: I love twig tea. It’s kinda like green tea but with twigs, not the leaves. This means there is way less caffeine and it almost has a nuttier taste. I like to steep it for at least 10 minutes so it gets almost black. Some folks call it kukicha. I call it tasty.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: This is tough… Lower Dens? Although I am not sure if this is just because I treasure their tunes, which only enhances my perception of them as a ‘live’ act. I’d like to now reflect on a poignant ‘live’ experience… I once did sound for an ensemble with whom Steve Reich premiered a piece. Long story much shorter, he showed up only for the actual show and ended up directing the live mix. It was a wild ride. I was sweating bullets. That man is rock-n-roll.

a: I feel like show locations are not necessarily about established venues, but rather promoters and what particular bands they decided to string together for that night. But ‘venue’ specific, I like Death By Audio, 285 Kent, Secret Project Robot and Zebulon – all for different and various reasons.

michael: Hmm, that’s tough given the parenthetical. The last song I listened to was “GB City” by the kickass Bass Drum of Death off their kickass album GB City. But the last song I really heard? I feel like the question means something more than the last song I listened to, suggesting something along the lines of the last song that sunk its claws in or destroyed me in some emotional capacity. q: What is your favorite beverage?

michael: I have a few, depending on when. Diet Coke (any time after noon and before nine), Gin and Tonic (either Bombay Sapphire and tonic with lime or Hendricks and tonic with cucumber, depends on how saucy I’m feeling), or just a nice big bottle of red wine from 7-Eleven. It’s a rotating cast, really, but never at the same time.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

michael: Lately I’ve had a blast at every Hausu show I’ve gone to (it’s this band of four friends of mine at Reed College). I want to say The White Stripes but sadly they are no longer, and I’ve only seen them twice (once I was in the midst of a mosh pit in Rome, that was insane). I guess really my favorite band to see live is any band that makes me lose my mind. Especially if my friends are in the band. That’s really special.

michael: Well I’ve never been to a show in New York that I didn’t play. Glasslands was the prettiest venue, I’d love to go to a real bumping show there sometime. But Silent Barn was really fantastic. So I’d say Silent Barn.

marisa: Well my favorite venue in SF is Bottom of the Hill. When we played NY, the funnest space we played was Silent Barn.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

michael: My latest and consuming project is my senior thesis on the novels of Virginia Woolf. Oh and I’ve started to download the entire R.E.M. discography because I realized the other day I’ve never listened to them, and that feels like a shame. Oh: musically Marisa and I have been writing and practicing new songs when we’ve had time. We’re really excited about what we’ve come up with so far and can’t wait for school to be over so we can get into the studio and record some of these tracks. So I guess just keep a lookout, new things should start happening by summertime. Also we have some old/new releases coming out – a 7″ with remastered songs from the first tape and another 5-song 7″ EP coming out, um…soon? Yes. And our Kill/Hurt tape sold out! The tape has two extra bonus tracks on it! Ok whatever. Oh and I think we’re doing a split 7″ with one of my favorite bands, Tan Dollar. But so far that’s all talk. Hopefully it’ll happen.

marisa: Well, we’ve been sitting down writing some new stuff. And guess what…I sing! I’m pretty excited for our new songs. You’ll be able to tell we’ve been sun deprived too long here in Portland. #whiteasfuck #seasonalaffectivedisorder

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

a: Wayne Gretsky‘s father told him something along the lines of “Don’t skate to where the puck is, skate to where the puck’s gonna be.” I think music and art in the internet age has become a new kind of monster. The last few years have been a bit bleak, but I am expecting something very promising and exciting to bloom this year. A new set of standards, to which I am working and contributing. Don’t sleep on it.

The seeds of spring are sprouting and summer’s supple sustenance is soon. I’m excited to see what everyone has been working on all winter long to come into light for everyone to see.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: I have recorded 100 songs in the month of April. It became a diary and narrative for myself and reflections on the month and my mental state. Not sure exactly how it will all surface yet, as I am actually finishing up the last tracks and have been full wrapped in it all month long.

c: Doomstar! is impressive every time I see them. Skimask is another local beast. Last time we played with them I was mesmerized and taken over by their energy. They make me grin from ear-to-ear. I had a ‘Sister Ray’ moment when I last saw MMOSS at Zuzu. They were possessed; I was possessed. I’m also REALLY looking forward to seeing The Feelies for the 4th time in a couple of weeks. Tightest band.

d: Judging from my limited experience with playing NYC with Young Adults I would have to say Death by Audio. I recently moved back so we should be playing here more frequently and get more venues under our belt. Ask us that again in 4-6 months.

c: Not too familiar with NYC but I love seeing bands at the Cake Shop. Death by Audio was fun to play. I’m looking forward to checking out Pianos this weekend and the cool jellyfish stage at Cameo.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

d: It’s impossible to ignore the phenomenon that is Odd Future. The kids can really write and produce some serious shit. I would prefer if the songs contained lyrics with significantly less rape content, but that aside, they are the freshest group to emerge from the hip hop scene in years. Like Wu-Tang bangin in your system.

c: The Underground Summit we played in February was a fascinating local culture phenomenon. As for other phenomena, the internet’s cultural dominance continues to frighten and impress me. It’s something I think about and talk to people about all the time. Remember when growing up didn’t include a global social pedestal? Weird times.

k: I am always excited when something gets rehashed like music or fashion. It amuses me to see where people pull inspiration from next.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

d: It’s to early too make conclusive statements concerning our next project, but we are working on some new material that happens to feed off of our more aggressive sonic impulses. I’m not sure if the rest of the songs we write will follow this pattern, but come check some of it out this weekend and see for yourself.

c: We’ve got some noise babies in the womb right now. They’re gonna be scary babies.

q: What is your favorite beverage?

s: Hell’s Belle belgian blond from Raleigh is the best beer I’ve ever tasted. Had it at The Cave in Chapel Hill, NC last time we went on tour. Wish they sold it in Brooklyn! I also drink a lot of tea–homemade ginger/lemon/cayenne/honey, or iced peppermint, or jasmine green tea, or… I’m a grandma. Oh, and Whippersnapper whiskey is a new fave.

c: I love when Brooklyn Brewery’s Post Road Pumpkin Ale appears on the shelves. Pumpkin beer is possibly the second greatest invention of all time, after guacamole.

j: Arizona Diet Raspberry iced tea in a 99 cent can. Tough to find.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

s: We played with Space Ghost Cowboys and Ramona Cordova at Silent Barn in December. Both of them were incredible.

c: Still thinking about the Autolux show I saw last year in Philly.

j: This band from Danbury called Ovlov. They’re pals of ours and we actually once skipped an Autolux show to play with them. It was worth it. We’ve also seen Young Adults dismantle a couple of rooms now. They’re from Boston…so many good bands from Boston.

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

s: Some of our friends ran a house show space in the Bronx that we’ve played a few times. It was called Paul Shaffer’s House. The shows were basically organized around touring bands who wanna play a night in between Boston and New York. In the words of my friend Jesse Carsten, seeing a band there made you say, “Yo, last night you guys re-associated my brain with my body in an unprecedented fashion, it was also very un-American, and now I am bisexual, thanks for that–I need to reaccess my personality, and get a new haircut–you were so good, wow, really man.” Unfortunately, it has been shut down by the cops, RIP Paul Shaffer’s House.

j: To play, definitely Silent Barn. We all liked the Showpaper 42nd St. Gallery when it was around.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

s: The second season of Archer! Also Big Sausage Pizza. Google it.

j: The approval matrix in New York magazine.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

j: Quilty‘s been working on our second album for almost six months now. It’s called Masonic and it’s a concept album with a concept that only Sarah seems to be able to understand. We’re going to release it with a companion comic book as well. The thing is, we self-released our first album and while it was a good experience, I think we’re hoping to find someone to work with us and help us put this one out. In the mean time, we want to drum up some interest by releasing a steady stream of tracks for free on our Bandcamp. We did two in October and we’ve got a bunch more in the works.

c: That album is so secret even I don’t know much. Anything I should know about it?

s: I’m playing Stephen Malkmus in an all-female Pavement cover band called Babement. This is not a joke. It is insanely awesome.

a: I have a weird answer. I have seen Underwater Peoples bands play more than anyone else based as much on personal interest as the fact they are always playing at gigs I attend. Real Estate, Julian Lynch, Andrew Cedermark and Ducktails solo specifically always sound great live, often sharing members. It feels very communal to go to any of their showcases. So yeah 4 answers.

a: I love seeing bands at Le Poisson Rouge, and The Bell House. Probably seen more shows at Bowery Ballroom than at any other spot in the city, Cake Shop for the Christmas lights, and shouts to my boys at Shea Stadium…

a: All the great films in the theaters this Spring… Meek’s Cutoff, Uncle Boonmee, Poetry, Putty Hill, and of course, I’m biting my nails in anticipation for Tree of Life.

a: I’m finishing up a full-length titled VEILS, and a split 7″ with asentimentalsong for Harding Street Assembly. Release dates for both are tbd.

m: You Got Lucky (youtube) by Tom Petty.

t: “Same Old Scene” by Roxy Music, from their much-maligned Flesh & Blood album from 1980. It’s serves as the opening and closing music of the film Times Square also from 1980. Total ear candy perfection, but still kinda weird. A heavily reverbed Ferry vocal with little of his trademark vibrato, makes him sound like a ghost in a genuinely creepy way.

m: I like iced tea, and I like Old Grand Dad, in separate glasses please.

m: Future Islands, can never see those guys play enough. Also YellowFever, their singer has a rad voice.

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

m+t: Death By Audio. Nicest folks, great sound, rad environment and we’ve always been paid. The best.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

m: There’s a new exhibit at The Natural History Museum called The World’s Largest Dinosaurs that we’re both really stoked about. My mom just emailed me about it actually. Check it out.

t: Watching art and music documentaries on Netflix Instant – it’s like the only thing that they’ve instant-ized completely and apparently there’s an obscure documentary about almost any band or artist you could possibly be interested in. I just saw “Athens Inside And Out” for the first time, which was thrilling for contemporary ted the Pylon super fan and 8th grade ted the over-zealous R.E.M. apologist. Really well made, by turns heartbreaking and completely inspiring. I also watched a great one about The Doors recently at my girlfriend’s insistence that really did convince me to stop being such a naysayer on those guys.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

a: i feel excited about the attention that’s on independent music and diy shows right now… it seems like both the music industry and mainstream culture are paying attention to whats happening in cities like brooklyn/s.f./ austin … i feel its a really exciting thyme to be alive cuz there’s so many great new bands popping up and trying new ideas ‘n such.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: we’re almost done w our debut record!!! its got 12 songs, less reverb …and all the songs from our orig . demos that were blogged about this past year… but recorded by carlos hernandez of ava luna… with great Mics and and this really cool old mixer from the 70′s …we ran all the drums and vocals thru the old pre amp channels to get an amazing tone … its all about TONE on this record !!!!!!! i’ve never worked so hard in the studio on any recording as i have on our debut… we’re thrilled to have it released late june/ early july w Marshall Tellar records in London— and possibly a Major label here in the u.s. … its also gonna have several new songs that kids have only heard at shows recently like “shitty baby” … “Thyme traveling high school dropout” …”Stealing from salvation army” (which is a protest song to battle conservatives) … also a instrumental psych tune that’s just designed to get high too called “Kools MCrules”..and a ode to the last time emily and i drank 4Loko hahaha called “no mo 4loko” which is very grungy ;) plus all the orig tunes like psychic mesa, crystal necklace, Secret VHS collection, these condos don’t belong, magical date night etc….

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

j: I’ve been listening to “Oh!” by Sleater-Kinney on repeat for a few weeks now. We went on a Northwest tour back in January and I’ve kind of just stayed there.

m: “Poor Unfortunate Souls” by Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid.

t: Beck‘s Cyanide Breath Mint from back in his K Records, pre-Scientology days. 90s slacker cynicism at it’s most beautiful.

q: What is your favorite beverage?

j: Alcoholic – Nothing beats a good manhattan on the rocks. Non-Alcoholic – Two way tie between coffee (skim milk, no sugar) and a cold glass of carrot juice.

m: Daddy’s in Brooklyn makes this thing they call the Margaveza, which is a glass 2/3 full of Mexican beer and 1/3 margarita on top. Sometimes I dream of washing down infinite tacos with infinite Margavezas.

t: Cafe Bustelo, blueberry smoothies, and Reality Blasters.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

j: I don’t think I can ever see Little Victory enough times. They are easily one of my top 3 bands in New York right now. I also relish any opportunity to see our buddies from Texas, Leg Sweeper. As far as I’m concerned, those two bands invented chemistry.

m: I will see Billy Bragg any time, any place…except for City Winery, which is waaaay too expensive. I listen to dozens of his bootlegs just to hear his between-song patter. Green Day is probably the band I have seen more than any other; the cooler-than-thou can whinge and moan about their recent output until the cows come home, but at the end of the day my guts still seize up when they launch into ‘Basketcase’ or ’2000 Light Years Away’…and that seizing is why I see bands in the first place, so, really, what’s your problem? I also have a taste for messianic stadium spectacle, so for real mass transcendence one must, immediately, see Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band for a proper baptism. Bad Credit No Credit make me the happiest of any band I see regularly in Brooklyn, and I cannot say enough good things about them.

t: Little Victory and Leg Sweeper will always poll extremely well with the three of us. If you can’t have fun watching those bands you’re just an asshole. I saw Pavement over the summer and it was pretty game changing. I’d only been a casual Pavement fan, but seeing them in Central Park on the big stage with all the rock star lighting was one of the more memorable shows of the summer. I would love to see the Urinals one day if they ever make it out east. Seeing Grass Widow last summer was a dream come true. I’m looking forward to seeing At the Drive-in and Fugazi when I curate All Tomorrow’s Parties.

j: I think Dead Herring is an unbelievably special space. When we played their for the first time, our expectations of what a show should be like totally shifted. It’s intimate, comfortable and the kids who live there are amazing. I have yet to see or play a show there that isn’t an absolute blast.

m: Seconded!

t: Definitely Dead Herring. There’s no other place like it in New York and it’s run by the nicest people on the planet.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

j: Special Agent Dale Cooper.

m: Of late, I ride for the following: The X-Files, Mr. Dream, Kant’s Critique of Judgment, Rick Ross, Parks and Recreation, Face the Rail, The Dark Knight Rises (7.20.12!!!!), and The Dicks‘ song ‘Saturday Night at the Bookstore’.

t: Mr. Dream’s “Trash Hit.” These dudes are going to save music from itself. It’s about time, too. Things were looking pretty bleak there for a minute.
