q and also a :: Screaming Females

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Jarrett of Screaming Females sent in these answers in our continuing series, q and also a.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: Resilient Bastard (mp3) by Shellshag. It is the “focus track” from their new record Rumors in Disguise which is their first with Don Giovanni Records. When we were on tour with Shellshag in summer 2009 they played us some rough cuts from Rumors in Disguise. We were in a van together and when “Resilient Bastard” came on I was completely blown away. It was the greatest Shellshag song I’d ever heard and I absolutely loved their previous record! “Resilient Bastard” has been on repeat since I got the promo copy of Rumors in Disguise.

q: What is your favorite food?

a: Lately it is bread. Artisan breads. I’ve been making my own artisan breads almost daily for the last month. Most of them take like 24 hours to complete. They are so involved but the results are amazing. I love cooking food and bread is such a different territory that I hadn’t explored until recently. It makes the sandwich loaf, pre-cut type shit that you get from the store look ridiculous.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: Jeff the Brotherhood! We just went on a two and a half week tour with them. I was so excited to see them play every night. Also this band called Mattress from New Brunswick, NJ are always amazing live. They are hard to describe. There is distorted keyboard, upright bass, and a junk drumset. They play manic punk songs.

Listen:
Particle Beam Dream (mp3) by Jeff the Brotherhood
Bone Jam (mp3) by Jeff the Brotherhood

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

a: To see a show at or to play at? Seeing shows at The Fort (Stupid Party‘s house) is always amazing. Death By Audio is probably the best mix of DIY space and decent sound and sight-lines in NYC. Playing at Music Hall of Williamsburg is always rad. The place can sound great, it usually sounds good on the stage, and it’s not too huge.

Listen: 1234 (mp3) by Stupid Party

q: OK, President Obama appoints you as the first Secretary of Culture, to whom do you give your first grant?

a: Myself? Can I do that? That’s what politicians do anyway, right? They always seem to find ways to get themselves kickbacks.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: We have a CD EP that just came out called Singles. It’s all of our songs that were previously only released on 7 inch singles and splits. We plan on selling them for pretty cheap. It just seems like a good way for more people to be able to hear those songs. Here is a song from Singles called I Do which was originally on a split 7 inch with Jeff the Brotherhood.

Listen: I Do (mp3)

Here are a couple more tracks from Screaming Females.

Listen:
Bell (mp3)
Fun (mp3)

You can purchase Singles for $5.65 from Don Giovanni.

Upcoming Date: Apr 9 @ Irving Plaza w/ Ted Leo + The Pharmacists
