q and also a :: MIRACLES

Adam and Baxter of MIRACLES sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: Antimagic‘s “Shake Shake Shake” has been in heavy rotation all year. I rediscovered De La Soul‘s Stakes is High last week after not listening to it for a few years. It still rules.

b: For me, it’s a tie between Young Widows‘ “Old Skin” and “Breathe Life” by Heavy Winged. The former is a minute and a half, the latter is about 19. Both are equally rewarding, but for very different reasons.

Downloadables:
Shake Shake Shake (mp3) by Antimagic
Old Skin (mp3) by Young Widows

Streamables:

Stakes Is High (youtube) by De La Soul

Breathe Life (soundcloud) by Heavy Winged

q: What is your favorite beverage?

a: The first cup of coffee in the morning.

b: Gotta go with either a dirty martini or a Manhattan when I get home from work.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: I try never to miss The Psychic Paramount these days. Their drummer is super fun to watch, in that way that reminds me of the dude from Trans Am. He’s a beast. Check out their live video from Santos Party House for proof. Also, Lo Moda and Double Dagger from Baltimore are favorites live.

b: I’ll second, third, and fourth The Psychic Paramount. That Santos show made my torso turn into a column of light. Do the bands need to be in existence still? If no, I’d say Don Caballero, pre-American Don. They scared the absolute shit out of me. If yes, in addition to The Psychic Paramount, I’ll throw in Converge or Rosetta. Super earnest, super intense, super inspiring.

Buildings Dansante (mp3) by Lo Moda
Luxury Condos For The Poor (mp3) by Double Dagger

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

a: Matt Rich‘s paintings. Jim Gallagher‘s collage work. Yoonha Park‘s videos for Small Black. But really, the culture yet to come, the end of global monoculture, the end of pattern exhaustion, a new and willful isolation, the culture quarantine. Art needs what is being celebrated in the slow/local/farm-to-table food movement – the rise of a hyperlocal style, instead of this global feeding frenzy for the next new thing whose beauty will be instantly commodified. To accomplish this, art and music would have to literally tune out globally and drop in locally, or something like that. That’s what we’re trying to get at with “Quarantine.”

b: I just think 2011 is proving itself to be an amazing year for music, live and recorded. The Psychic Paramount‘s new album is preposterously good, the new My Disco is super hypnotic, The Skull Defekts album with Dan Higgs is mind-bending, and the new Young Widows is somehow skeletal and ass-kicking at the same time. Then there’s new stuff from Liturgy, Burmese, INDIAN, The Body, Deafheaven…I could go on and on. All of these bands have such a fresh and idiosyncratic take on music, it’s incredibly invigorating to listen to.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a+b: Two brand new tracks available here! Unfortunately, Chris Carson, who is responsible for the awesome drums on these songs, is focusing on solo stuff right now, so we’re writing new material with a couple of drummer friends and looking for a more permanent replacement. Drummers get in touch if you’re interested!

q and also a :: ANTIMAGIC

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Marcia and Ted of ANTIMAGIC sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

m: You Got Lucky (youtube) by Tom Petty.

t: “Same Old Scene” by Roxy Music, from their much-maligned Flesh & Blood album from 1980. It’s serves as the opening and closing music of the film Times Square also from 1980. Total ear candy perfection, but still kinda weird. A heavily reverbed Ferry vocal with little of his trademark vibrato, makes him sound like a ghost in a genuinely creepy way.

Streamable: Same Old Scene (youtube)

q: What is your favorite beverage?

m: I like iced tea, and I like Old Grand Dad, in separate glasses please.

t: Scalding hot black coffee.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

m: Future Islands, can never see those guys play enough. Also YellowFever, their singer has a rad voice.

t: Talk Normal and The Psyched fer sure; so many good ones going right now – really enjoyed Heavy Cream a few weeks back as well, Parts And Labor, ZULUS

Downloadables:
Walking Through That Door (mp3) by Future Islands
Culver City (mp3) by YellowFever
In A Strangeland (mp3) by Talk Normal
Meow Meow (mp3) by Heavy Cream
A Great Divide (mp3) by Parts & Labor

Streamables:

SXSW 2011 Sampler (bandcamp)

Blackout (Live @ Death By Audio) by ZULUS

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

m+t: Death By Audio. Nicest folks, great sound, rad environment and we’ve always been paid. The best.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

m: There’s a new exhibit at The Natural History Museum called The World’s Largest Dinosaurs that we’re both really stoked about. My mom just emailed me about it actually. Check it out.

t: Watching art and music documentaries on Netflix Instant – it’s like the only thing that they’ve instant-ized completely and apparently there’s an obscure documentary about almost any band or artist you could possibly be interested in. I just saw “Athens Inside And Out” for the first time, which was thrilling for contemporary ted the Pylon super fan and 8th grade ted the over-zealous R.E.M. apologist. Really well made, by turns heartbreaking and completely inspiring. I also watched a great one about The Doors recently at my girlfriend’s insistence that really did convince me to stop being such a naysayer on those guys.

Downloadable: Dub (mp3) by Pylon

Streamables:

Radio Free Europe (Live on Letterman) (youtube) by R.E.M.

Touch Me (Smother Brothers Comedy Hour) (youtube) by The Doors

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

m+t: We’re having a 7″ release show on April 25th with our dear and talented friends The Psyched and YVETTE! We’re super stoked to finally have finished screenprinting the jackets and assembling everything. We’re also perilously close to finally finishing our eternally forthcoming 2nd full length, which we can barely contain our excitement about. Seriously.

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

So, Pete from Dinowalrus remixed a track from YVETTE‘s four-song 7″. He made something that sounds like a chilled-out version of Harold Faltermeyer covering some Primal Scream. Listen.
