q and also a :: Sleepies

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Josh, Max, and Thomas of Sleepies sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

j: I’ve been listening to “Oh!” by Sleater-Kinney on repeat for a few weeks now. We went on a Northwest tour back in January and I’ve kind of just stayed there.

m: “Poor Unfortunate Souls” by Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid.

t: Beck‘s Cyanide Breath Mint from back in his K Records, pre-Scientology days. 90s slacker cynicism at it’s most beautiful.

Downloadable: Oh! (mp3) by Sleater-Kinney

Streamable: Cyanide Breath Mint by Beck (youtube)

q: What is your favorite beverage?

j: Alcoholic – Nothing beats a good manhattan on the rocks. Non-Alcoholic – Two way tie between coffee (skim milk, no sugar) and a cold glass of carrot juice.

m: Daddy’s in Brooklyn makes this thing they call the Margaveza, which is a glass 2/3 full of Mexican beer and 1/3 margarita on top. Sometimes I dream of washing down infinite tacos with infinite Margavezas.

t: Cafe Bustelo, blueberry smoothies, and Reality Blasters.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

j: I don’t think I can ever see Little Victory enough times. They are easily one of my top 3 bands in New York right now. I also relish any opportunity to see our buddies from Texas, Leg Sweeper. As far as I’m concerned, those two bands invented chemistry.

m: I will see Billy Bragg any time, any place…except for City Winery, which is waaaay too expensive. I listen to dozens of his bootlegs just to hear his between-song patter. Green Day is probably the band I have seen more than any other; the cooler-than-thou can whinge and moan about their recent output until the cows come home, but at the end of the day my guts still seize up when they launch into ‘Basketcase’ or ’2000 Light Years Away’…and that seizing is why I see bands in the first place, so, really, what’s your problem? I also have a taste for messianic stadium spectacle, so for real mass transcendence one must, immediately, see Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band for a proper baptism. Bad Credit No Credit make me the happiest of any band I see regularly in Brooklyn, and I cannot say enough good things about them.

t: Little Victory and Leg Sweeper will always poll extremely well with the three of us. If you can’t have fun watching those bands you’re just an asshole. I saw Pavement over the summer and it was pretty game changing. I’d only been a casual Pavement fan, but seeing them in Central Park on the big stage with all the rock star lighting was one of the more memorable shows of the summer. I would love to see the Urinals one day if they ever make it out east. Seeing Grass Widow last summer was a dream come true. I’m looking forward to seeing At the Drive-in and Fugazi when I curate All Tomorrow’s Parties.

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

j: I think Dead Herring is an unbelievably special space. When we played their for the first time, our expectations of what a show should be like totally shifted. It’s intimate, comfortable and the kids who live there are amazing. I have yet to see or play a show there that isn’t an absolute blast.

m: Seconded!

t: Definitely Dead Herring. There’s no other place like it in New York and it’s run by the nicest people on the planet.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

j: Special Agent Dale Cooper.

m: Of late, I ride for the following: The X-Files, Mr. Dream, Kant’s Critique of Judgment, Rick Ross, Parks and Recreation, Face the Rail, The Dark Knight Rises (7.20.12!!!!), and The Dicks‘ song ‘Saturday Night at the Bookstore’.

t: Mr. Dream’s “Trash Hit.” These dudes are going to save music from itself. It’s about time, too. Things were looking pretty bleak there for a minute.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

j: Nick Sylvester of Mr. Dream just recorded two songs for a new 7″ we’re doing. I can’t wait for it to come out.

m: So kids, take out a second mortgage and invest in SLEEPiES securitized financial instruments!

t: Talk to your broker.

mp3 :: The Corin Tucker Band > Doubt

Friday, August 13th, 2010

The Corin Tucker Band features Ms. Corin Tucker of the indefinitely hiatused Sleater-Kinney, as well as Seth Lorinczi of Golden Bears and Sara Lund formerly of Unwound. Their yet-to-be-released album is entitled 1,000 Years. This track is reportedly more rocking than the rest of the album, so get excited but don’t expect the rest to this heavy, ok? Listen.

Downloadable: Doubt (mp3) (source: LHB)

In other Sleater-Kinney news, Carrie is putting the Monitor Mix blog on hold while she works on Portlandia for IFC, and Janet is still a Jick and their collab with Beck should come out next year sometime.

Oh and 1,000 Years is scheduled to hit stores on October 5th, so there isn’t really any preorderage just yet, but the album does have a Buy Olympia item number so it should not be too long. The KRS store is here.

q and also a :: Magnetic Island

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Here is the next installment in out continuing interview series q and also a. These are the answers from Lisa of Magnetic Island (and formerly Renminbi)…

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: Actually, a new Magnetic Island tune we rehearsed for the first time the other night. I was listening back to the tape to see how it’s sounding.

Listen: Summer Phase (Demo) (mp3)

q: What is your favorite food?

a: If I could only have one food on a desert island, it would be Mexican. Bean and cheese burritos, Cali style. My new favorite place is L.A. Burrito in the ‘Burg. Don’t miss Calexico in the Slope, either!

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: Back in the day it was Sleater-Kinney. They just rocked the house. Also, Sonic Youth and Patti Smith never seem to disappoint. On the current local scene, I love seeing Calves — they are an experimental noise group and always destroy it. Also, Aa, Pet Ghost Project, Taigaa! and Here We Go Magic. They all bring it.

Listen: All Hands On The Bad One (mp3) by Sleater-Kinney

Listen: The Diamond Sea (Edit) (mp3) by Sonic Youth

Watch: Gloria (Live in Germany 1979) (youtube) by Patti Smith

Listen: oh, boring (mp3) by Calves

Listen: Thirteen (mp3) by Aa

Listen: Age of Automatics (mp3) by Pet Ghost Project

Listen: In The Decay (mp3) by Taigaa!

Listen: Collector (mp3) by Here We Go Magic

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

a: DIY/loft shows are where it’s at. There are a lot of good spaces around and the vibe is really pure at these shows. For playing, Boobzone and Fort Useless are new favorites. For seeing others, Glasslands and Monster Island Basement are always pretty rad.

q: OK, President Obama appoints you as the first Secretary of Culture, to whom do you give your first grant?

a: Little Hamilton, a DIY space and community center in Nashville, TN. One of the most inspiring and impressive DIY spots we played on our tour last summer. They’ve got programs for kids during the day, they have a zine lending library/store set up, and they throw all-ages shows at night.

If I were to give the grant to a band, it would probably be Mr. Airplane Man. I’m not even 100% sure they are still active, but they are a girl-duo from MA who make gorgeous, reverb-drenched heartbreakers that are pleasingly retro. “Up in the Room” is a personal fave — knocks my socks off every time.

Listen: Up in the Room (mp3) by Mr. Airplane Man

Ed. Note: Be sure to also check out Sister Spaceman.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: Magnetic Island grew out of the ashes of Renminbi, and is about branching out to collaborate with different musicians from different backgrounds. Our focus will be on putting songs out as soon as we can and not necessarily waiting around to have full albums recorded and manufactured. We’ll have a new single out in May and probably an EP (or a couple of digital 7 inches) in June.

Here is the other Magnetic Island song. It is a Reed/Cale cover.

Listen: A Dream (mp3)

And here are a couple tracks from Renminbi.

mp3s :: Best Songs Of The Aughts > 2000-2004

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Welcome to part one of GIMME TINNITUS’ Best Songs Of The Aughts where we look back on the best songs of 2000-2004.

Back when all the “best of the decade” whoopla started earlier this year (with Pitchfork’s Best Of), I began thinking about the songs I would have blogged about had I actually been blogging (or let’s say posting about music on an angelfire page) way back in 2000. I sifted through many tracks to come up with this list, and I hope it helps you reconnect with some tracks you may have forgotten or better yet connect with something you may have missed.

The blog-o-sphere has been in a “best of the decade” craze of late, with all kinds of lists… here and here and here and here and here and here and here. There is even an aggregated page over at largehearted boy specifically for the topic.
