q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: The song “Wide Bed” by Lionlimb has got to be the one. I had the chance to play with them on a tour. The day of the show I was caught up in this random bad mood that had settled in. When they started playing this tune it totally cut through the fog. I’ve since played their new record over and over again and wide bed just keeps gripping me. It’s this perfectly minimal song, haunting organ, triumphant guitar solo. Every note seems essential in its message. And then the vocals! It’s all gloom and then transcendence! It has this balance of themes that really interests me.

q: What is the first album you remember purchasing?

a: I feel lucky to say my first record I purchased was a 3-disc Queen greatest hits. There were certainly a lot of suburban pop punk and metal core stuff that I bought just after that, that I’m a bit more hesitant to boast about. The queen cd set came at the same time as my portable CD player and I have some string memories of sitting in the backseat of family road trips jamming those Queen tunes. Even still it’s a really fun band to listen to. The songs are catchy as hell and I appreciate their ability to pull off such silly lyrics right alongside real gut-wrenching stuff.

q: Is there an album you wished you knew about when you were younger?

a: My musical education actually has been pretty serendipitous. In the midst of my aforementioned metalcore/poppunk phase I was shown some really awesome weird music early on by a coworker of my Dad’s. Like early high school he showed some Chicago shit like Joan of Arc and Tortoise that sort of sent me on my way. I do wish however that I heard Psycho Candy before Stoned and Dethroned. There was this period of time where I didn’t know Jesus and Mary chain were noisey!

q: What is the last album you purchased?

a: The last record I bought was from this amazing Detroit band, Turn To Crime. It’s called Can’t Love. It is so sick. It’s snotty, but genuine too, catchy as hell, fuzzy, weird, TOTAL Pleasure to listen to.

q: What is your favorite artist/band to see live?

This band Running from Chicago totally takes the cake. It is the most spastic energy I’ve ever really scene. Super loud, melted and energetic. Alejandro on the drums rips!

q: What is your favorite artist/band to listen to recorded (i.e. not live)?

Lately it’s been the new Cindy Lee record. I also just recently discovered listening to records in headphones (admittedly a little late to the game) and this record is something amazing to get lost to. It’s beautiful and ugly and the sounds on the record are unlike anything I’ve heard. Really like entering a new sonic space.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

Not sure if this is exactly what you’re talking about, but some friends of mine have been getting really into pro and amateur wrestling lately and by proximity have been learning about the universe that wrestling exists in. It’s super intellectual and complex and is all about like meta type thinking. It’s really fun. Plus, the last house party I was at, I got to witness my friend being double suplexed. So cool!

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

In light of my recent discovery of listening to entire records with nice headphones, I’d recommend giving that a shot. If ya got a lava lamp, turn that thing on too.
