q and also a :: Coughy
Julain Fader (Ava Luna, Quilty) and Andy Molholt (Laser Background, Speedy Ortiz) are Coughy. They sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of q and also a.
q: What is the first album you remember purchasing for yourself?
j: First album I ever bought for myself was Sha Na Na – Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay, though I think I was 7 and got my mom to buy it for me. The first album I bought with my own money was Presidents of the United States of America’s self titled album. Bought it at the Newbury Comics in Newton, MA (RIP).
a: “Spice” by Spice Girls. I was ashamed to tell people this in elementary school but now I am quite proud !
q: Is there an album you wished you knew about when you were younger?
a: A late and great influence in my life has been the early albums of Brian Eno. I would love to go back in time and show myself Here Come the Warm Jets at age 8. Probably would’ve loved it.
j: I was lucky enough to grow up with two parents who had a pretty extensive and varied record and CD collection, so I got exposed to a lot of cool things early. I wish I’d heard Harry Nilsson earlier — my dad still claims he’s schlocky and we argue over that point.
q: What is one of your favorite memories of experiencing music in a live setting?
j: Juana Molina, NYC 2017
Richard Thompson, NYC 2005
D’Angelo, Forest Hills 2016
a: I saw Prince in Baltimore in 2015, just under a year before his death. It was amazing. He did the performance just after the death of Freddie Gray in remembrance of his life & as a rally for peace. Favorite part of his set was that he played about 10 seconds of “Darling Nikki,” the crowd got really excited, and then he abruptly stopped and never came back to the song for the rest of the night. A very weird move that I admire.
q: What is the last album that you purchased?
a: Ohmme – Parts
j: Quelle Chris – Guns
q: What is the best and worst thing about being in a band in 2019?
j: Best thing about being in a band is joy of collaboration. The worst thing is that there’s way more supply than demand.
a: What he said !
q: Any thoughts or feelings regarding the band Coughy from Bucharest, Romania?
j & a: We hope they’ll reunite and play with us in Romania.
q: What should we know about Ocean Hug?
a: We had a lot of fun making this record :)
j: If you don’t like a Coughy song, don’t worry, it’ll be over soon!
