q and also a :: HIVE BENT

Steph F. and Kyle B. are HIVE BENT. The Baltimore-based noiserock duo sent us these answers to the next q and also a.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

steph: the last song I was listening to was “white panic” by shady hawkins, they’re so fucking good and i want to play with them so badly.

kyle: “Pretender” by Hoover. I seem to rediscover that band every year or so. So good.

q: What is your most common reaction to hearing your own music?

s: “holy shit i didn’t think you guys would sound that loud and heavy but… holy shit.” no joke, that is every reaction from every person who has heard us play, haha.

k: When I hear it? “O no, not this again…”

q: What is your favorite artist/band to see live?

s: Ahhh, I’m gonna say Two Inch Astronaut… I love watching them play, Sam is absolutely hypnotic with his guitar work and Daniel’s bass blows me away, followed by Matt and his tight as shit drumming. I am often in a haze after watching them play.

Downloadable: Part of Your Scene (Live on WVAU’s Live in the Hive) (mp3)

k: Multicult. Probably the tightest band I’ve seen in years, and I don’t mean that in the way people tell bands, “yah, you guys are tight,” when they really mean the band sucks but they don’t want to be mean to their faces.

Downloadable: Luxury (mp3)

q: What is your favorite venue (in NYC, if applicable)?

s: we haven’t played very many NYC venues, but Shea Stadium is really, really, fucking cool. their whole concept and the space as a whole is really amazing to be seen.

k: Death By Audio reminded me a lot of Big Snow, which was awesome. I know I definitely enjoyed playing both of those and Shea Stadium.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

s: hm, this question is a hard one, in terms of pop culture, i couldn’t tell you. I think I get too obsessed with tumblr culture and reblogging hilarious images all the time or constantly reading about intersectional feminism and social awareness.

The Hive Bent Tumblr is @ huve-bunt.tumblr.com.

Ed. Note: At time of publication the Hive Bent Tumblr appears to have been hijacked, so maybe check that out later, not right now.

k: The whole digital distribution of music and crowd-sourcing phenomenon. It’s odd in that it seems to be polarizing the artistic and entertainment ends of the “music industry”, and yet things are becoming much more accessible. Also: twitter and Major League Baseball.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

s: i know that kyle wants to do something else separate from hive bent, but getting the time to do it is always a pain. we’re both very busy people in the ‘professional’ sense (i’m a pastry chef for a busy restaurant and kyle makes maps). I can tell you that my next project involves a strawberry rhubarb streusel.

k: I wanna do a space rock thing where I play guitar, because I miss playing guitar in a band. We’ll see when that happens, though. Hive Bent is working on new stuff in the mean time. Also, there this whole LIFE thing that keeps us busy…
