q and also a :: Junk Culture

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Sample artist Deepak Mantena a/k/a Junk Culture sent us these answers to our questions in the latest q and also a.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: Here are some I listen to all the time. I’ve got a heavy band-crush on Oh Astro. ‘Candy Sun Smiles’ and ‘Empty Air’ off Champions of Wonder are two of my faves.

‘Before I Leave’ by Fennesz is my stuck on a desert island track. If you ever see me driving around I’m probably singing along to Javelin’s ‘Oh! Centra’ or just cruising to ‘Tryouts’. It sounds like those guys know what’s up. And oh man, the tracks ‘Talamak’ and ‘Causers Of This’ off Toro y Moi’s new record. Love those.

Listen: Candy Sun Smiles (mp3) by Oh Astro

Listen: Before I Leave (mp3) by Fennesz

Listen: Oh! Centra (mp3) by Javelin

Listen: Talamak (mp3) by Toro y Moi

q: What is your favorite food?

a: I’ll tell you my favorite drink: Milo’s Sweet Tea. You can get it in the south. The thing I love about it is that their quality control is kind of shitty. So sometimes you get a bad batch that makes you think “this isn’t so special” but that really wakes you up to to how good their good batches are, which are close to perfect.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: How about some bands I want to see live? I can’t wait to see Dam-Funk, Angel Deradoorian (someone send me her phone number), Dan Deacon, both of my brothers’ solo stuff. Got to see my friends Pterodactyl practice for a show and it was killer. Finally got to see Javelin play a month ago.

I just recently saw my friend Colin’s band The Unwed Teenage Mothers play and that was amazing. His energy is incredible and the show was great. People should see them play if they get a chance.

Listen: Toeachizown (mp3) by Dam Funk

Listen: High Road (mp3) by Deradoorian

Listen: Get Older (mp3) by Dan Deacon

Listen: Esses (mp3) by Pterodactyl

Listen: If That’s Love (mp3) by The Unwed Teenage Mothers

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

a: In NYC I’ve only played at The Mercury Lounge, Union Hall, and Death by Audio. Death by Audio was definitely my favorite – such nice people. It was a packed house Valentine’s Day show with Nite Jewel, Blondes, and Class Actress. Half way through my set this absolutely blazed girl got up on stage and was dancing hard the rest of my set.

Listen: Want You Back (Phaseone Remix) (mp3) by Nite Jewel

Listen: You Mean So Much To Me (ACID REDUX CUT) (mp3) by Blondes

Listen: Careful What You Say (mp3) by Class Actress

q: OK, President Obama appoints you as the first Secretary of Culture, to whom do you give your first grant?

a: Twitter.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: I released an EP called West Coast that’s available pay-what-you-want here: http://www.illegal-art.net/shop#release119. I recently got back from a tour with Phantogram which was amazing. I’m working on a new EP and that’s gonna be out in October on Illegal Art. It’s quite a bit different than my old EP. Going to be touring this summer and fall. Also my brother Nitin and I are working on a comedy web series we hope will come out this fall (http://tv.celerystudios.com/). Damn I need to get to work.

Listen: Mouthful Of Diamonds (mp3) by Phantogram

Here a couple tracks off West Coast.

mp3s :: Record Store Day 2010

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

I just realized I haven’t blogged about my Record Store Day experience yet. I made some time to check out Sound Fix in Williamsburg. Unfortunately, all the RSD goodies were gone by the time I got there. So what did I get? Nothing all that “out there.” In fact, I really didn’t take any chances at all (yes, frequent visitors to this blog probably already have all the mp3s below). Previously on RSD, I would purchase used CDs of albums I had not heard (e.g. Zs, Blues Control). This time I went for the vinyl of albums where I already had the digital. And guess what, they are all awesome. My purchases follow…

:: Sisterworld (Deluxe Edition) by Liars

Listen: Scissor (mp3)

Watch: Scissor (youtube) (embedding disabled so follow the link)

and there is also that remix disc…

Stream: Scissor (Remix by Pink Dollaz, Lance Whitaker and Transformation Surprise) (youtube)

You can purchase Sisterworld from Insound

:: Coconut (on snazzy yellow vinyl) by Archie Bronson Outfit

Listen: Shark’s Tooth (mp3)

Watch: Magnetic Warrior (youtube)

You can purchase Coconut from Domino Records

:: No Mas by Javelin

Listen: Oh! Centra (mp3)

Listen: Vibrationz (mp3)

Watch: C Town (Live @ NYU) (youtube)

You can purchase No Mas from Luaka Bop

Truthfully though, when you are obsessed with music, any day can turn into “record store day.” So, go to your local independent record store today. Clicking through mp3 aggregators and/or blogs is just not the same a flipping through stacks of LPs. Music can be more than zeros and ones, listening to a little vinyl will remind you of that fact.

However, if you really really do not feel like going to a record store you can of course order one of the above records by clicking on the purchase link provided.

q and also a :: DINOWALRUS

Friday, January 29th, 2010

And now a new feature here at GIMME TINNITUS, q and also a, where I chat/email with bands and they answer some questions. To kick off the feature I met up with Pete from Dinowalrus. Here we go…

q: What is the last song you heard?

a: The hour-long composition E2-E4 by Ash Ra Tempel guitarist, Manuel Göttsching.

Listen: E2-E4 snippet (youtube)

q: What is your favorite food?

a: St Louis style ribs (in particular, the ones at Pappy’s Smoke House).

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: Comets On Fire or Boredoms… a distant 3rd would probably be HEALTH.

Listen: Lets Take it All (mp3) by Comets On Fire

q: What is your favorite NYC venue?

a: We’ve had really great shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg and Dead Herring.

q: OK, President Obama appoints you as the first Secretary of Culture, to whom do you give your first grant?

a: Excepter.

Listen: Kill People (mp3)

q: Anything we should know about your album, %?

a: The album was “informed by the liberation of moving to NYC in 2006 and finding that, at the time, there was an audience for pretty crazy and mutant music.” DINOWALRUS didn’t know at first whether it would fall into the “indie” scene or the “art noise” scene, though now they have found themselves to be the weirdest band on the indie scene rather than the poppiest band on the noise scene. There were a bunch of especially inspring bands around in 2006 that were “challenging” their listeners to, sonically, go places they had never been before, including Parts & Labor, Dirty Projectors, Psychic Ills, and Gang Gang Dance…and I think our approach was informed by that more than anything else. Ironically, earnest and classic indie rock appears to be all the rage now, and I’ve been pretty bored with that!

Listen:
Fractured Skies (mp3) by Parts & Labor
Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie (mp3) by Dirty Projectors
Killers (mp3) by Psychic Ills
Nicoman (mp3) by Gang Gang Dance

“If you are serious about music, when you make an album you have to take 45 years of pop/rock history in account, and I think this album was informed as much by trying to find a unique place in music history as it was by current happenings around town,” and Dinowalrus wanted to put out something that was “mind blowing.” % doesn’t really have “a direct pop sensibility,” but it will “keep on your toes” and “make you feel free.”

So, if you are bored with present form of lofipoppunk that seems to be everywhere now, check out some DINOWALRUS:

Listen:
BEAD (mp3)
Nuke Duke ‘Em (mp3)

In the future, they will probably narrow their focus a bit, and not cram as many ideas into their next album. Pete is currently working on two recording side projects, one is an album of stadium metal and the other one is a baggy Madchester acid house record.

There will be no trek to SXSW this year for Dinowalrus, but they are doing a small mid-Atlantic tour, and a New England tour Plus, they are working on setting up a tour in April of California with Tempo No Tempo. They are playing a show tomorrow (1/30) and also next Thursday (2/4)…

Upcoming Shows:
Jan 30 @ House Of Yes w/ Javelin, The Shivers, Ava Luna, and Shark?
Feb 4 @ Littlefield w/ The Vandelles and The Naked Hearts
