q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

i: Sin In My Heart (youtube) by Siouxsie and the Banshees

d: Green Light (youtube) by Sonic Youth

i: Oh, if you are gonna say Green Light I have to say Star Power (youtube) by Sonic Youth

q: What is your favorite beverage?

d + i: Coffee

i: Mmmmmm bloody marys, vodka and apple juice

d: yes to bloody’s and apple / lemon / ginger juice

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

d + i: Melvins. We just saw them do Lysol, Houdini, and Eggnog and it was so good. Two drummers ripping for 2 hours and being insanely tight… Amazing.

Downloadable: Honey Bucket (Live @ MHOW) (mp3) (props to NYCtaper)

You can d/l the whole show @ nyctaper.com.

q: What is your favorite venue (in NYC, if applicable)?

d + i: Dead Herring rules. We like everything about that place. Total club house vibe. Death By Audio is rad too.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

d + i: Netflix watch instantly, hairless cats.

d: Asking our bass player John, and drummer odell about their sex lives.

i: Yeah we are writing a book based on that.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

d + i: We’re making a video for our song “Deadbeat” right now, and we have a 10″ coming out on Swill Children/Aagoo this fall!

We have some shows coming up soon too. August 4th with HAPPY NEW YEAR, Antimagic, Life Size Maps. And we’re playing one of the Jelly parties at the end of summer.

q and also a :: Young Adults

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Demitri, Chris and Kurt of Young Adults sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

d: No Life (youtube) by Milk Music

c: Last song I really felt was February Fourteenth (mp3) by the Lilys. Goddamn.

k: Caught in a Hustle (youtube) by Immortal Technique

q: What is your favorite beverage?

d: Tie between Whiskey and Water

c: Coffee

k: Gin + Tonic/Coffee

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

d: Abe Vigoda when they were performing Skeleton. I think that mostly has to do with the fact that I was seeing one of my favorite bands in a smaller venue. If I got to see Sonic Youth at Great Scott or the Glasslands instead of Prospect Park I might have went with them.

c: Doomstar! is impressive every time I see them. Skimask is another local beast. Last time we played with them I was mesmerized and taken over by their energy. They make me grin from ear-to-ear. I had a ‘Sister Ray’ moment when I last saw MMOSS at Zuzu. They were possessed; I was possessed. I’m also REALLY looking forward to seeing The Feelies for the 4th time in a couple of weeks. Tightest band.

k: Doomstar! and Thee Oh Sees for sure!

Downloadables:
World Heart (mp3) by Abe Vigoda
The Diamond Sea (Edit) (mp3) by Sonic Youth
Night at the Movies (mp3) by Doomstar!
Wander (mp3) by MMOSS
Should Be Gone (mp3) by The Feelies
I Need Seed (mp3) by Thee Oh Sees

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

d: Judging from my limited experience with playing NYC with Young Adults I would have to say Death by Audio. I recently moved back so we should be playing here more frequently and get more venues under our belt. Ask us that again in 4-6 months.

c: Not too familiar with NYC but I love seeing bands at the Cake Shop. Death by Audio was fun to play. I’m looking forward to checking out Pianos this weekend and the cool jellyfish stage at Cameo.

k: Bruar Falls and Death by Audio where we played with Shark?.

Downloadable: I Got Friends (mp3) by Shark?

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

d: It’s impossible to ignore the phenomenon that is Odd Future. The kids can really write and produce some serious shit. I would prefer if the songs contained lyrics with significantly less rape content, but that aside, they are the freshest group to emerge from the hip hop scene in years. Like Wu-Tang bangin in your system.

Editor’s Note: There are nine free albums of the various Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All projects @ oddfuture.com/musics.

c: The Underground Summit we played in February was a fascinating local culture phenomenon. As for other phenomena, the internet’s cultural dominance continues to frighten and impress me. It’s something I think about and talk to people about all the time. Remember when growing up didn’t include a global social pedestal? Weird times.

k: I am always excited when something gets rehashed like music or fashion. It amuses me to see where people pull inspiration from next.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

d: It’s to early too make conclusive statements concerning our next project, but we are working on some new material that happens to feed off of our more aggressive sonic impulses. I’m not sure if the rest of the songs we write will follow this pattern, but come check some of it out this weekend and see for yourself.

c: We’ve got some noise babies in the womb right now. They’re gonna be scary babies.

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: I’m listening to Rip It Up by Orange Juice right now.

q: What is your favorite beverage?

a: Coke or Arizona Ice Tea.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: I’ve never really thought about this before but Sonic Youth were amazing the few times I’ve been able to see them live. Animal Collective has never disappointed. It’s always cool to see our friends’ bands play too.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

a: I’m not really excited about anything culturally. I guess the one thing that gets me pumped is YouTube.

a: I am working on a lot of different projects right now. Keep your eyes peeled for Tan Dollar (tandollar.blogspot.com), Horse Head (bighlittleh.bandcamp.com), and Dreamless (dreamless.bandcamp.com). There should be lots of new music from these projects this year.

Parts & Labor are back with their follow up to Receivers. The new album is entitled Constant Future, and is set to be released on March 8th via the Jagjaguwar label.

Dan Friel, BJ Warshaw, and Joe Wong are still creating “unique, electronic landscapes melded with buzzing, anthemic hooks.” This time they teamed up with producer Dave Fridmann (a/k/a Mr. Flaming Lips). And the results are “massive.”

The 39 minutes of Constant Future have been culled from over 40 songs. Here is the title track. Listen.

Downloadable: Constant Future (mp3)

q and also a :: Magnetic Island

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Here is the next installment in out continuing interview series q and also a. These are the answers from Lisa of Magnetic Island (and formerly Renminbi)…

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: Actually, a new Magnetic Island tune we rehearsed for the first time the other night. I was listening back to the tape to see how it’s sounding.

Listen: Summer Phase (Demo) (mp3)

q: What is your favorite food?

a: If I could only have one food on a desert island, it would be Mexican. Bean and cheese burritos, Cali style. My new favorite place is L.A. Burrito in the ‘Burg. Don’t miss Calexico in the Slope, either!

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: Back in the day it was Sleater-Kinney. They just rocked the house. Also, Sonic Youth and Patti Smith never seem to disappoint. On the current local scene, I love seeing Calves — they are an experimental noise group and always destroy it. Also, Aa, Pet Ghost Project, Taigaa! and Here We Go Magic. They all bring it.

Listen: All Hands On The Bad One (mp3) by Sleater-Kinney

Listen: The Diamond Sea (Edit) (mp3) by Sonic Youth

Watch: Gloria (Live in Germany 1979) (youtube) by Patti Smith

Listen: oh, boring (mp3) by Calves

Listen: Thirteen (mp3) by Aa

Listen: Age of Automatics (mp3) by Pet Ghost Project

Listen: In The Decay (mp3) by Taigaa!

Listen: Collector (mp3) by Here We Go Magic

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

a: DIY/loft shows are where it’s at. There are a lot of good spaces around and the vibe is really pure at these shows. For playing, Boobzone and Fort Useless are new favorites. For seeing others, Glasslands and Monster Island Basement are always pretty rad.

q: OK, President Obama appoints you as the first Secretary of Culture, to whom do you give your first grant?

a: Little Hamilton, a DIY space and community center in Nashville, TN. One of the most inspiring and impressive DIY spots we played on our tour last summer. They’ve got programs for kids during the day, they have a zine lending library/store set up, and they throw all-ages shows at night.

If I were to give the grant to a band, it would probably be Mr. Airplane Man. I’m not even 100% sure they are still active, but they are a girl-duo from MA who make gorgeous, reverb-drenched heartbreakers that are pleasingly retro. “Up in the Room” is a personal fave — knocks my socks off every time.

Listen: Up in the Room (mp3) by Mr. Airplane Man

Ed. Note: Be sure to also check out Sister Spaceman.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: Magnetic Island grew out of the ashes of Renminbi, and is about branching out to collaborate with different musicians from different backgrounds. Our focus will be on putting songs out as soon as we can and not necessarily waiting around to have full albums recorded and manufactured. We’ll have a new single out in May and probably an EP (or a couple of digital 7 inches) in June.

Here is the other Magnetic Island song. It is a Reed/Cale cover.

Listen: A Dream (mp3)

And here are a couple tracks from Renminbi.

Listen: Siobhan (mp3)

Listen: Set-Up (mp3)

If you like, make sure you grab the Surface EP for free on the EP minisite @ CASH.

Upcoming Dates:
May 11 @ Fontana’s Bar (w/ Fiasco and The Danvilles)

May 14 @ Spike Hill (w/Pet Ghost Project)

May 30 @ Passport 2 Taiwan Festival in Union Square Park
