q and also a :: The Soft Pack

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

The next band in our continuing q and also a series is The Soft Pack. The drummer, Brian sent us these answers.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: Freak Train (mp3) by Kurt Vile was the last song I really listened to intently. Something about that shiny guitar and the slow-train tempo on that snare got my blood all hot and sticky.

q: What is your favorite food?

a: Mexican food from San Diego–it can’t be beat.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: Abe Vigoda or Obits. It’s a toss up because both bands blow me away.

Listen:
Dead City/Waste Wilderness (mp3) by Abe Vigoda
Two-Headed Coin (mp3) by Obits

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

a: The Bowery Ballroom for a few reasons: 1) it sounds great, 2) the people working there are the shit, 3) it feels classy, so I feel classy.

q: OK, President Obama appoints you as the first Secretary of Culture, to whom do you give your first grant?

a: Ariel Pink, Bruce LaBruce (technically a Canadian though), and Brontez Purnell (great essay in BUTT mag).

Listen: Alisa (mp3) by Ariel Pink

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: The Soft Pack a new album came out February 2nd, and now we tour for the rest of eternity.

Here are a couple tracks from The Soft Pack’s latest self-titled LP.

Listen:
C’mon (mp3)
Answer To Yourself (mp3)

Here are a couple tracks from The Soft Pack’s (formerly eponymous) LP, The Muslims.

Friday Night Vids :: Spoon + Archie Bronson Outfit + The Soft Pack + Strange Boys + Eluvium

Friday, February 12th, 2010

UPDATE: I totally forgot about that EP of reworked The Forms songs that was announced last year. We heard there are a lot of awesome guests on it. Matt Berninger of little band known as The National is one name that was thrown around. I suppose the EP is being meticulously tweaked in the band’s recording studio. I assume the EP will be released this year.

Oh, and I’m sure no one will notice a new release from LCD Soundsystem.

mp3 :: The Soft Pack > C’mon

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

As you may or may not know by now, the non-pussy San Diego indierock band called The Soft Pack have a self-titled LP coming out next year on the excellent Kemado record label. Contained within this very post is The Soft Pack’s most recent song to hit the internets. You may remember the song from when I posted a live version it. It’s catchy as hell, as can be expected the band formerly known as The Muslims. Listen…

mp3 :: The Soft Pack > Come On (Live At Vibes)

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Speaking of Shark?, they just opened for the ever-touring Soft Pack (formerly The Muslims). Now, I’m not sure if the band is going to release a proper full length album or if they will continue to release EPs. To tell you the truth, I don’t really care, just as long as they keep making catchy-ass postpunk tracks that sound like this. Listen.

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

>> Hey people with remix skills, download the stems for the new Yppah remix contest… here.

>> Thee Oh Sees get the Pukekos treatment… here.

>> Grooms (the verb, not the noun I think based on the background image on thee olde myspacee) is the new name for Muggabears. I guess I understand, though their situation was nowhere near as dire as say The Muslims/Soft Pack, right? So, Grooms has a show coming up on the 19th of April @ Death By Audio with Jeff The Brotherhood, Sisters, and Survival (sorry no linky). Listen to my fav classic Muggabears track…

mp3: Browns > Two Of You

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Now that For All The Saints (1928 Recordings) is stuck firmly in my head, I thought I should check some more songs from Browns of Brooklyn. I’m not gonna make a big deal over the fact that these guys were labelmates of The Soft Pack before the name change and move to Kemado. I’m just gonna say this… listen to this now.

Downloadable: Two Of You (1928 mp3)

The Browns’ album Family History is available from Other Musichere. Hopefully, they will book some shows in the area in the near future. (Why did I get to that Obits show late?)
