q and also a :: Burnt Ones

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Mark from Burnt Ones sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

a: I just listened to “Ballad of Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)” by George Harrison … it’s the last song on a mix I made for the site Mixtape///Mountain. That song is so good … check the mix out, should be up now or soon or something.

Streamable: Ballad of Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll) (youtube)

q: What is your favorite beverage?

a: Red wine … I’m not picky. Actually pretty dumb / “whatever” about my wine selection.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: Probably Thee Oh Sees. They are consistently mind-blowing live and they make great records very quickly.

Downloadables:
I Was Denied (mp3)
Ghost in the Trees (mp3)
Ruby Go Home (mp3)
Tidal Wave (mp3)

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

a: I think Cake Shop might be the only place I’ve played in New York that I really enjoyed, but hopefully that changes. My old band played Death By Audio a few years ago; which was a really cool spot but no one was really there that night.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

a: Cassette tapes coming back in to the fold. Lot’s of good tape labels right now … I’m mostly excited cause the Burnt Ones van only has a tape deck.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: Burnt Ones should have another 7-inch coming out this summer and possibly a cassette release coming as well. Lots of new Burnt Ones songs, just figuring out what to do with them at this point.

Downloadables:
Bury Me In Smoke (mp3)
Kaleidoscope Eyes (mp3)
Soft City (mp3)
Gonna Sit Up and Listen to T. Rex (All Night Long) (Daytrotter Session) (mp3)
Damage Case (Motörhead Cover) (mp3)

The May Mix 2010

q and also a :: Super Wild Horses

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Amy and Hayley, the Melbourne-based musical duo known as Super Wild Horses sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series.

Super Wild Horses

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

amy: It’s Because I Love You (youtube) by The Master’s Apprentices. For some reason I always thought this song was by Cat Stevens. Dunno why. I gave it a really good listen today and it’s a killer tune.

Streamable:

hayley: Me About You (youtube) by 60′s psych band Gandalf. It’s on of those tunes that could get forgotten on an album but it’s an absolute beauty.

Streamable:

q: What is your favorite beverage?

a: Caipirinhas. I was introduced to these in Brasil a couple of years ago. They became a staple of my diet whilst in Sao Paulo and I wish i could get a decent one here!

h: An Old Fashioned. Love those cherries.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

a: We were lucky to play with Thee Oh Sees on their recent trip to Australia. We’ve seen them a few times now and they’re a great live band. Eddy Current Suppression Ring have always been mind-blowing. There was a band called The Darling Downs (Kim Slamon and Ron Peno) who were playing in Melbourne a couple of years back and they were wonderful to watch. Ron Peno is such a charismatic frontman and I don’t think I ever heard an audience member making a sound while he held court on stage.

Downloadables:
Ruby Go Home (mp3) by Thee Oh Sees
Anxiety (mp3) by Eddy Current Suppression Ring

Streamable: Circa ’65 (soundcloud) by The Darling Downs

h: I don’t get to see this band as much as I should, but Clairy Browne and The Bangin Rackettes are a killer live band complete with leopard print back up singers, sax and enviable doo wop moves. So much fun.

Streamable: Lean Lanky Daddy (youtube)

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

a: I’ve only been to NYC once (on our tour there last year) and we played at Death by Audio, a really great venue run by some cool cats. I always wanted to visit the Apollo Theater.

h: I like Arlene’s Grocery and DBA.

q: What piece(s) of culture are you really really excited about right now?

a: There’s a new art museum that’s opened up in Hobart (in Tasmania, the island off the south coast of Australia) called MONA – The Musuem of Old & New Art. I went down for the opening and it’s a really inspirational place, from the architecture to the collection. It’s been funded and opened by a guy with Asperger’s who made his fortune by running a gambling syndicate based on a ‘winning’ numbers formula – he’s made it free to the public and it’s a great thing to have in a small town like Hobart. It gave me faith in humanity to see a guy pour so much much money and energy into something for the people -

h: Kung fu movies. I’ve just been introduced to some amazing films and soundtracks from the 70′s. Lady Snowblood is one of the most stunning films I’ve seen in a long time. Apart from digging up old films I’m also really enjoying a Melbourne artist called Peter Green – in particular his folk inspired sculptures of space men and giant toads wearing sun hats. They look like they’ve been made out of sugar in the most beautiful murky pastel colours. I couldn’t stop myself from going back to his last exhibition and I can’t wait to see what hes going to pull out next.

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

a: A split 7″ with Reading Rainbow is out on HoZac pretty soon. A few more collaborations coming out this year and we’re also recording a second album around May in NYC.

Editor’s Note: Reading Rainbow have their own q and also ahere.

Here is a video plus a few mp3s from Super Wild Horses.
